When we visited Airlie beach back in 2014 we arrived on a picture perfect day. The sun was shining, the water was stunning and we couldn’t wait to explore everything this place had to offer. We checked into the Island Getaway Holiday Park and started thinking about booking a boat trip to one of the local islands.

Then the next day mother nature decided to unleash some heavy rain so that stopped any island hopping we planned on doing. This rain had set in for a couple of days so we thought the best place we could go was the local library so the girls could have a play, while we researched our next place to stay.
The Island Getaway Holiday park was a great little place to stay. We love using our Top Tourist discount as it makes it much cheaper for a powered site plus they didn’t charge for the girls (as they were under the age). The facilities were great, they had a little park for the girls to play on and a few other activities for the older kids to play as well. We were only planning on staying two nights but because the rain was getting heavier we thought it best to stay another day and try to see a little more of the area.
We thought we’d make the most of the wet weather and drive out to a beautiful waterfall called Cedar Creek Falls and it was flowing nice and fast. The girls enjoyed splashing and throwing rocks into the water. The rain started again so we headed off to see a few other beaches but the low cloud had set in and we couldn’t see much at all.

The best thing about travelling is meeting like-minded families on the road. We were lucky enough to be in a caravan park with two other traveling families that were completing their lap of Australia. With the terrible weather and cooped up children we thought it was best to invite both families for a drink at the pub across the road. It was such a great afternoon with the kids running around and making up games. It was nice that all the adults could sit down and compare stories about travelling with kids, distance education, destinations and funny things that have happened on the road.
Although the weather was terrible when we visited Airlie Beach, it just means we have to visit again so we can go island hopping 🙂
