Fishing in the Bynoe Harbour
Bynoe Harbour is the sister harbour to Darwin and the perfect hot spot to try your luck at catching the elusive Barramundi, Salmon and giant Mud Crabs. Bynoe Harbour is a great place to find some shelter when the wind is blowing. Its deep channel out to sea has some great reef ledges that hold some fantastic reef fish. And don’t forget the uninhabited islands in the area, the perfect place to watch the flatback turtles nesting.
Where to camp at Bynoe Harbour?
If you’re like us and you’re looking for a fantastic campground then head out to Bynoe Retreat. A fisherman’s paradise with great access to the boat ramp and a short boat trip out to the reef.
What makes Bynoe Retreat so special?
James was kind enough to give us some local hot spots in Bynoe Harbour. We had a great day on the water, hitting the reef and chasing the Barra in the creeks, thanks to James tips on where to go.
Access to boat ramps
Being 1km away from an estuary boat ramp on Bynoe Harbour and a small drive to a freshwater creek it gives you choices as to what fishing you would like to do. We enjoyed putting our crab pots down near the boat ramp. Watch out for the resident croc!
There is nothing better than a hot shower at the end of a huge fishing day. This campground has 3 large ensuite-style bathrooms with amazing water pressure and endless hot water. It has a great space to hang everything up and nothing got wet on the floor 😉
What I really love about his Bynoe Retreat is that it’s a family owned and run property. James and his family have created a great space for families to come and camp. They understand that families need some space to run and make noise, as well as not paying huge fees. Did you know that kids stay free? Awesome right!
It can get pretty warm up in the top end so to find a property with large open sites with shade was great. It was nice to have such a big area for the girls to run around. Bynoe Retreat also has fire pits (and wood provided). There is a little friendly wallaby “Izzy” that likes to visit often and loves to eat all your vegetables. The bird life was great to see with all the Black cockatoo’s that fly by each sunset.
In the area
Bynoe Retreat is a great place to stay if you would like to stay out of the hustle and bustle of Darwin and do some day trips around the area. Dundee Beach, Litchfield National Park, Darwin, Crab Claw Island and Mandorah Jetty are some great destinations that are only a drive away.
Bynoe Retreat is approximately 30km from Dundee Beach and 95km from Darwin. It’s a beautiful 20-acre property surround by bushland.

Thanks to James and his family for creating such a great space for families to come and relax in. We definitely enjoyed our stay and would love to come back to explore more of the area.
